Were unable to see that. it was shrouded in rain and the hail core. it was maybe a mile to two miles ahead of us from our software we were using. i know it s difficult to see in terms of how widespread the damage is, but what are you hearing in terms of how much of the town is devastated or how many miles this thing may have traveled? at least from what i m hearing anywhere from three to five miles long damage path. nearer the hospital, complete devastation. there s several homes that were there and businesses, strip malls, that kind of thing, unrecognizable at this point. and basically what you can see is just the hospital itself. now, there have been steve, are you from joplin? no, i m actually from the kansas city area. do you know the area fairly well? yes, i know it fairly well, yes. so, one of our affiliates is reporting, again, it was a multivortex tornado, several reports of numerous buildings ....
Think of this as bubbling. the air bubbles up. you get clouds that become taller and taller. they re turning into cumulus nimbus. because the whole world is spinning. if you get this storm all by itself part of the back of the storm can turn into a low pressure system itself a small cyclone. and here s the picture of the cyclone on joplin, missouri, yesterday. it actually looks like a big hook echo. we talk about this hook. it is hailing here. it is storming back here. but right through here not much is going on. if you want to be a storm chaser you want to be here. you don t want to be here in the hail core and you don t want to be here for very long. you don t want to be there at all. what stopped people from taking great pictures of this is because this was called a rain wrapped tornado. by the time it got to joplin, it was wrapped up in rain. the tornado was many the middle of the rain. all you saw was a bunch of rain moving around. not realizing there was a 200 ....
meteorologist jacqui jeras. we have been monitoring these feeds. you have been monitoring scanner traffic. we re told a number of injuries, possibility casualties. people are looking for people. what s going on? so much devastation. it s hard to get a handle on how widespread this is. of course, communication is extremely limited. they re asking people to stay out of the city because emergency crews are trying to set up triages to help the people who have been injured. and also, you know, there are some reports of doas as well, so we re not sure how many at this time. a tornado did touch down in joplin just before 6:00 central time. moved through the downtown area and continued to push on up toward the north and east of there. we ve got reports of buildings in downtown damaged, homes that have been completely leveled, trees that have been snapped off. and just, you know, rubble all over the place. the scene has been described as being roar ific. there are reports, as ....
