HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - A statewide flash flood watch has been extended into the day Monday as possible localized downpours could lead to flooding in areas that have been soaked over the past week. The National Weather Service extended the watch until 6 p.m. Monday. The threat of widespread heavy rain has diminished. However, there is still enough moisture and lingering instability over the islands that could trigger localized heavy rain, which then could lead to flash flooding.

While the heavy rains started to let up by early evening, water levels in swollen waterways were slower to recede and authorities warned severe flooding was still a possibility. The order was lifted about 11:30 p.m. seven hours after it was issued. A flash flood warning that was in effect for much of the day also expired around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. But with the ground so saturated, National Weather Service forecasters warned that any rains could trigger flooding.
