Joy married Hal Boyd on May 16, 1951 in Lamesa and they were together for 63 years before his passing in 2014. Joy was a star basketball player in Sparenburg, in Lamesa for the Golden Tornadoes where she graduated from high school, and for a short while at McMurry College in Abilene.
