A community meeting has been told it will be months before temporary classrooms are on site to replace mould-damaged rooms at Hutt Valley High School.

Five hundred senior students have been forced to learn from home for half the week due to classrooms that have leaked for years, becoming unsafe with toxic black mould.

Students shut out of their classrooms because of toxic mould say the problem is a symptom of chronic underfunding for the upkeep of public schools.
About 350 Year 12 and 13 pupils at Hutt Valley High School have had to do half their weekly learning at home since Monday after unsafe levels of black mould was discovered in 13 learnings spaces and a dance studio earlier this year.
At a meeting held in the school hall on Thursday night to update the community on how the school and the Ministry of Education planned to respond to the situation, deputy head student Lucy Rodger said while she was happy to see progress, the commitment by the ministry to demolish and rebuild C block was “horrendously and frustratingly overdue”.

Hutt Valley High School’s chairman of the board of trustees, Hamish Bowen, says redevelopment plans need to go beyond demolishing the mouldy C Block.
With Hutt Valley High School’s mould-riddled C Block slated for demolition, the school’s board chairman says a much wider redevelopment is needed to avoid history being repeated.
In March, several classrooms in the school's C Block were evacuated and sealed off after unsafe levels of black mould were detected. Following more testing, thirteen learning spaces and a dance studio were closed which has forced senior students to work from home when term two started this week.

A roofing report from 2019 warned of the potential for fungus to become a health hazard in areas of Hutt Valley High School that were recently closed because of mould.
A potential mould problem at Hutt Valley High School was raised years before 13 classrooms were forced to close, leaving students to learn from home, for that very reason, a report shows.
In 2019, the school commissioned building consultants CoveKinloch to look at the state of roofs on some buildings. The report, seen by
Stuff, identified moisture issues as a result of rotten, peeling and holey roofs at the school could become a health hazard, because of the potential for fungus growth.

Hutt Valley High School’s mouldy buildings did not become a priority for the Ministry of Education until classrooms were forced to close, the school’s board of trustees chairman says.
This week the Lower Hutt school announced hundreds of senior students would have to spend half their time learning from home next term after toxic mould was found in several learning spaces. Thirteen classrooms and a dance studio have now been closed because they are unsafe.

Principal who turned around Hutt Valley High School will be sorely missed

Bowen, who has been on the board for more than four years, said Sinclair was given the task of turning the school around.

“He did a fantastic job. It's gone from strength to strength. Before Ross the roll had dropped, and they were taking kids from out of zone. Now we’re at capacity, in high demand, and can’t take anyone from out of zone,” Bowen said.
