Shawnee: Gear up for Trash-Off Day Saturday

The City of Shawnee has been working with Central Disposal for its annual Trash Off and Spring Clean Up day.
On Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the City of Shawnee and Central Disposal will have large roll-off containers at five sites for Shawnee residents to bring non-hazardous waste.
The only site accepting hazardous waste is the Public Works center, at 111 S. Kickapoo.
To dispose of hazardous waste, residents will have to provide proof of an active sanitation account with the City of Shawnee/Central Disposal and an ID/drivers license with a current Shawnee address will be required.

The second weekend in March is a great time to support the arts. The Community Art Gallery will be hosting a Spring Fling event, and Shawnee Little Theatre is ending its long intermission, performing its first play since February of 2020. There will also be a chance to hunt for unique items at the expo center. Here are some of the things going on in Shawnee this weekend:
1. Support community theater: Shawnee Little Theatre has finally ended its long intermission. The community theater will be presenting “A Doll's House, Part 2” this weekend. Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Masks are required, and only 40% of the theater's capacity will be sold to allow social distancing. However, the performance will also be streamed online for those who can't make it to the theater in person. The play contains some adult language. Tickets can be purchased online at shawneelittletheatre.com or at the SLT box office, 405-275-2805. Box office hours are 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Pott. County Junior Livestock Show underway this week

This week, hundreds of students and their livestock will converge on the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center for the Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show.
Events are scheduled Tuesday through Friday, March 2-5.
The sheep, doe and wether goat shows will be held Tuesday. Wednesday is the beef show and Thursday is the swine show. The Premium Auction is Friday.

Life Recovery Shawnee meets at 7 p.m. at Open Door Church of God, 1200 N. Tucker St. (one block north of Wallace) in Shawnee. • A formal sentencing hearing took place for defendant Byron James Shepard, 38, of Okemah, convicted in the 2017 murder of Tecumseh Police Officer Justin Terney. On the felony count of murder in the first degree, the death sentence was issued to Shepard.

1. Take part in Claus for a Cause: Some Shawnee businesses have teamed up for Claus for a Cause to benefit a local non-profit. Cuckoo Bird & Dashing T Boutique, located at 1817 N. Harrison in Shawnee, will be accepting toys for a toy drive each day through Sunday. Discounts will be available for each new toy brought in. Rachel Cleere Photography is also participating and will be offering 10-minute time slots for photos with Santa Sunday at the boutique, with packages starting at $40. Eats & Sweets is also donating treats for those attending. All proceeds from the photos will go to Legacy Parenting Center.
