Row as plans revealed to remove the beacon in Vulcan Park, Workington

Furious residents have hit out after a decision was made to remove a memorial beacon from a town park. The Duffield Beacon, in Vulcan Park in Workington, was a gift to the town and the move by councillors has lit a flame under residents. The beacon was built in 1992 from locally made rails and is named as a tribute to James Duffield, a key figure in the founding of Workington’s steel industry. The idea has been described as wanton vandalism and there has been uproar about the proposal. Among those left shocked at the idea is Workington Town Councillor Michael Heaslip.

More places for Santa to come and visit in Workington

Independent councillors in Allerdale have been working with Workington Derwent Rotary club in order to make sure as many children as possible get a glimpse of Santa this year. Councillor Herbert Briggs said: "It's been bad for everyone and at this time of year we just need something to pick people up." The councillors, accompanied by Santa, will be walking around the streets from 5pm to 8pm. Children can pose with santa for a socially distanced photo taken by parents. On December 20 they will walk around Northside, Senhouse Street, Milburn Street, Vulcans Lane and finish at Frostoms...
