The James Webb Space Telescope released a batch of new images which show in remarkable detail 19 spiral galaxies that reside relatively close to our Milky Way. These photos offer new insights into star formation as well as galactic structure and evolution.
Face-on spiral galaxy, NGC 628, is split diagonally in this image: The James Webb Space Telescope’s observations appear at top left, and the Hubble Space Telescope’s on bottom right. JWST’s observations combine near- and mid-infrared light and Hubble’s showcase visible light. Dust absorbs ultraviolet and visible light, and then re-emits it in the infrared. A stunning new set of images from the James Webb Space Telescope shows the variety of forms that exist within spiral galaxies like our Milky Way
The new images captured by the James Webb Space Telescope are "mind-blowing even for researchers who have studied these same galaxies for decades," one scientist said.
Webb observed 19 nearby face-on spiral galaxies as part of of the PHANGS program.
