Former head of egg producer pleads guilty to bribing ex-farm minister
A former head of a major Japanese egg producer pleaded guilty Monday to bribing ex-farm minister Takamori Yoshikawa when the first hearing of his trial was held at the Tokyo District Court.
Yoshiki Akita, 87, provided a total of 5 million yen ($45,200) between November 2018 and August 2019 to the then farm minister with the intent to induce favors regarding animal welfare standards, according to the indictment.

At the hearing, prosecutors argued that Akita, who led the Hiroshima Prefecture-based Akita Foods Co., gave cash to Yoshikawa, 70, in hopes the farm ministry would object to the implementation of international animal welfare standards which would have raised the cost of keeping animals. ....

OSAKA – The Dec. 8 resignation of special Cabinet adviser Koya Nishikawa after it was revealed he participated in a boating trip funded by a Hiroshima egg farm now at the center of a bribery scandal was not just a blow to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.
Until he lost his Diet seat in 2017, Nishikawa had been a member of a faction of the Liberal Democratic Party led by Secretary-General Toshihiro Nikai.
Another Nikai faction member, Takamori Yoshikawa, is also involved in the scandal.
At different times, both men have also served as the faction’s secretary-general making them not just rank-and-file members but powerful executives. ....
