Started out of necessity and turning into a business, Hombakazi Mercy Nqandeka’s Homba Crafts line is a colourful, creative endeavour rooted in celebrating African crafts. Studying abroad, Nqandeka returned to SA in 2018, and spent most of 2019 searching for a job. The 33-year old has a master’s degree in agriculture and another in climate change transitions.
Why would doctors and nurses use a boring old stethoscope when they could have one decorated with traditional Xhosa beadwork?This is just one of the projects of Elliotdale powerhouse Mercy Hombakazi Nqandeka, who founded Homba Crafts, a Xhosa bead and crafts company at Bulungula in 2019.
