Taking a clue from Central Asian country Uzbekistan, Gujarat government on Tuesday invited high net-worth individuals, institutions and corporate for horticulture farming on lease agreement on barren wasteland owned by the state government.
For the purpose, the state government has initially identified 50,000 acres of barren land in five districts including Surendranagar, Sabarkantha, Patan, Kutch and Banaskantha and allowed farming on lease contract under 'Chief Minister Horticulture Development Mission'.
"During my visit to Uzbekistan, the government there offered barren land to Indian entrepreneurs on lease with a plethora of incentives. We are trying to replicate the same model in Gujarat to transform barren land in cultivable land," said Chief Minister Vijay Rupani while announcing the mission. Accompanied by a high-level business delegation, Rupani had visited Uzbekistan to attend the Central Asian country's first investment summit modelled on the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in October 2019.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, while interacting with the media on Tuesday, said that the government has applied for a patent to change the nomenclature of dragon fruit to 'Kamalam'. According to the CM, the word dragon for the fruit sounded inappropriate and so the Gujarat government had decided for the fruit to be called as Kamalam.
While interacting with the media on Tuesday during the launch of the Chief Minister Horticulture Development Mission, Rupani said, "We have applied for the patent of the Dragon fruit to be called as Kamalam. But as of now, we the Gujarat government have decided to call the fruit as Kamalam."

Gujarat government has decided to rename dragonfruit as Kamalam since its outer shape is similar to that of a lotus. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said the name dragonfruit sounded inappropriate and clarified that there was nothing political about this decision.
Speaking at the launch of Chief Minister Horticulture Development Mission, Rupani said, "We have applied for the patent of the dragonfruit to be called Kamalam. But as of now, the Gujarat government has decided to call the fruit Kamalam." He added, "Even though the fruit is known as dragon fruit, it does not sound appropriate. The word Kamalam is a Sanskrit word and the fruit does have the shape of the lotus, so we have decided to call it Kamalam, and there's nothing political about it."
