Is This the World's Most Aging-Friendly City? – Next City

“After my retirement, I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life sitting on a couch, watching TV,” says Borzel. The city where she lived in central Germany did not offer many volunteering opportunities to pensioners at the time. Meanwhile, she watched on Facebook as her friend Uwe Künkenrenken detailed his visits to a kindergarten to play music and participate in theater with children. Künkenrenken’s wife, Anni, was engaging with kids from the same kindergarten by reading to them and teaching German to refugee students.
In contrast to Hildburghausen, an engaged life well into old age is the norm where the Künkenrenkens live. And it’s not by accident. The product of a decades-long project to build an aging-friendly destination, their leafy, quaint west German town of Arnsberg might be one of the most successful examples of senior-friendly urban development in the world. At its core? A city department like no other: the Fachstelle Zukunft Alter — the Department of Future Aging.

BIDDEFORD — Dr. Shirley Frederick has been practicing medicine in Maine for 30 years, and while she takes care of a range of people from birth on up, she said she’s seeing many of her patients are approaching their older years.

Students help St. Cloud Hospital present HELP program

During the COVID-19 pandemic, doors have been closed all over the world.
But for College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University student volunteers in the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) at St. Cloud (Minnesota) Hospital, doors have also been opened – both in-person and remotely.
“We’ve piloted and expanded the HELP program and are launching a new course to support this program and tie its opportunities to classroom learning,” said Chris Bolin, visiting assistant professor of English at CSB and SJU.
During fall semester, five CSB and SJU volunteers connected (both on-site and remotely) with patients admitted to St. Cloud Hospital to explore creative writing and have stimulating conversations to prevent the onset of delirium in at-risk patients. During spring semester (B block), the number of CSB and SJU volunteers will swell to 25.
