Time to check in again? 10 hotel stocks across market cap, one with an upside potential of up to 27%

One of the sectors which has got strongly re-rated in the last four years has been hotel and tourism. Whenever there is a re-rating of a sector, it is the leader of that sector which tends to get re-rated first. So, it was the stocks of Indian hotels, which led the rally and then others joined the bandwagon. Now whether the industry has got re-rated should be judged by how the numbers have panned out across the companies in the sector. If there is an improvement across the board, then it is sectoral re-rating which is sustainable. If only one or two players have shown improvement then it is probably because the management of those companies have adopted a clever business strategy. Now the question is whether the re-rating will sustain or not. Second, whenever the markets are falling should one buy hotel stocks? The answer to these questions lies in looking at the fundamental numbers across the players in the industry. We take a look at 10 stocks, some of which are not rated, but their overall score is positive to neutral.

hotel stocks: Macro tailwinds continue; 7 hotel stocks from large, mid and smallcap space, one with upside potential of up to 27%

Thirty years back in 1994, when the Indian market witnessed the first round of bull run after the Harshad Mehta scam, the sector which was on top gainer list was the hotel sector. In those days, the logic given in the brokerage research reports, which used to come out very infrequently and were miniscule in numbers, was that as the Indian economy opens up, more foreign business travellers would be coming to India. That will lead to higher occupancy and it is not easy to set up a 5 star hotel so the demand supply equation would be in their favour. Today there is an element of foreign travellers but more importantly, the unstoppable traveling Indians along with domestic business travellers who are creating a situation where once again demand is higher than supply leading to a situation which is favorable for the bottomline of hotel companies. The question is are the valuations cheap, surely not, but is the growth likely to be stronger and stable? The answer is probably yes. We take a look at 7 stocks, some of which are not rated, but their over score is positive to neutral.

hotel stocks: Time to extend your stay? 4 hotel & related service stocks with one with an upside potential of up to 33%

After almost two decades of being ignored by the street, in the last three years hotel and hospitality related stocks have been once again in focus of the street. Travel tourism and airlines, everything related to the hospitality sector suffered the maximum damage due to Covid-19. But as they say, tough times bring the best out of some. Some hotel companies used the Covid crisis to put their house in order. While they have seen a run up in the last two years and that is why if one looks at overall estimates, analysts seem to be cautious. However there are enough hotel assets, which are ready to be taken over under the asset light model, companies which are able to use them without compromising the brand value are likely to be the one which will emerge as a long term winner and probably that would lead to a change in the analyst estimates.

hotel stocks to buy: Time to check in? 4 smallcap hotels stocks for taking exposure to booming tourism spend

It might surprise the majority that the first sector to get re-rated post liberalization in 1991 was the “ hotel sector”. The reason, it was expected that both business traffic and tourist traffic to India would see a boom. In fact it did happen but then as usual , many new players entered and existing players in their wisdom took debt to expand presence and we saw the industry getting into trouble. It is almost after two decades that in covid and post covid, there has been a consolidation. Many builders who turned into hoteliers are the ones which have been moving out of business.

hotel stocks: Party continues! 4 hotel & related service stocks with upside potential of up to 33%

What appeared as revenge traveling post covid, turned out to be unstoppable traveling Indian. Probably that is the reason that in order to take advantage of our insatiable desire to travel some of the countries have removed the requirement of advance visa for Indians. If one goes by airline ticket prices, room rent and occupancy level of hotels it is very clear that both airlines and hotel prices have remained higher than normal in all seasons of the year, whether busy or off season. If one looks at the results of the hotel companies, they have turned better on many counts.

“We think this is a great time for the aviation industry to make money. We have seen a very strong correction in crude prices, which is clearly reflecting profitability going forward and the demand has been very steady. We are still doing almost 4 lakh plus passengers on a daily basis.”

“The conditions are basically playing a major role in giving a good amount of business to most of the hospitality players – be it Indian Hotels, East India Hotels or even the mid-tier small hotel segment. Be it ITC, be it Indian Hotels, the hospitality heroes have all been following the asset-light model strategy now, wherein most of the properties that they are working on now is on an operational management contract, vis-à-vis earlier situation of owning the assets.”
