of the lawyers, a consternation about how rhodes was going to say they really have a man able to restrain him. in fact they had three lawyers there. one of them was a guy who was added at the last-minute rhodes s request. he tried to push other people on the team out. so there s been an ongoing tension within his legal team about what the best defense strategy was here, because this is a guy who thinks he s very smart. he wants to do his own defense here. but i don t think it was looking for any mitigation necessarily in that hearing. he was willing to take the hit on whatever marginal impact the words of the last minute to the judge might end up having, whether that shaves off a few months or a couple of years perhaps off of his sentence. but he just wanted to put that political message out there. he wanted to put that message out there to the american people, putting himself in that same begin with all these
