Girls outdo boys in returning to North Karnataka schools | Hubballi News

After nine months, on-campus learning for class 10 and 12 students resumed across the state on Friday
BELAGAVI: The number of female pupils attending classes on the first and second day after schools reopened was more than boys in many North Karnataka districts.
In Yadgir, for instance, the total attendance of kids learning in classes 8,9 and 10 was 44%, of which 27%-28% are girls. In Belagavi, of 60% who attended classes, about 35% are girls. Although data for several other districts are yet to be gathered, officials on the ground say the trend is similar everywhere.
Nalini Atul, additional commissioner of department of public instruction, Kalaburagi division, said schools she visited had more number of girls as compared to boys. She pointed out that girls who were working at home with limited freedom in conservative rural families were the first to come back to school. “It is in school that these kids have both freedom and liberty. Here, children can play, speak loud, read, discuss with full liberty. This has brought them back to schools in good numbers,” she said.

Karnataka: Silent campaign that forced govt to restart schools | Hubballi News

Representative image
BELAGAVI: A silent campaign initiated by education activists, experts, doctors and members of school development and monitoring committees (SDMCs) was instrumental in changing wary parents and government’s opinions about on-campus learning during the pandemic. The efforts were focused mainly on addressing fears over restarting schools and Vidyagama sessions.
In October last year, concerns about coronavirus infections among teachers and students forced the government to halt the Vidyagama programme. The concerns, activists argued, were not based on hard data as the actual number of Covid-19 cases among students and teachers was lower than what many had thought. Citing experts, TOI reported how the fears were unfounded.

Karnataka: School campuses come alive as students return in numbers | Hubballi News

MYSURU/MANGALURU/ HUBBALLI/BELAGAVI: Students across Karnataka were thrilled to see their friends and teachers on Friday as schools reopened for grades 10 and 12 after a nine-month gap. As part of Covid-19 precautions, they wore masks, followed social distancing and washed hands frequently.
Classes were held for limited hours and with a limited number of students. Still, campuses were buzzing with energy after months of quiet. Schools went the extra mile to make students feel safe and welcome, organising skits, performing artis, writing positive messages and offering plenty of encouragement.
“I am really excited to be back in school. At one point, I had wondered whether I would see my classmates and teachers on the campus again,” said Ananya, a class 10 student in Raichur. Geeta, a class 10 student of Vidyaranya High School in Dharwad, is relieved that on-campus learning has resumed. “I was fed up with online classes. I was missing actual classroom studies and, of course, my teachers and friends,” she said.

BALLARI: Yuva Shakti Sena Samskritika Kreeda Hagoo Graminabhivruddhi Sangha, a youth association at Hire Hadagali in Huvin Hadagali taluk of Ballari district, has made it a point to take an undertaking from the contestants of gram panchayat election to address 37 problems dogging their village.
Sangha president Vinayaka Harapanahalli and secretary Siddesh K L M said that they thought of the idea going by their bad experiences from the past elections.
“Every time, they get elected by merely making promises. There is no mechanism available to check their performance. So we have prepared a list of 37 problems faced by the villagers. As the village elders were particular about development, we approached the 47 candidates contesting for 21 GP seats. They all signed on that, thereby taking an undertaking to solve those problems with some elders as guarantors and witnesses,” they said.

Mask & sanitiser sales fall in Hubballi | Hubballi News

Representative image
HUBBALLI: Medical stores are witnessing a steep drop in the sales of masks and hand sanitisers. Some say that the demand has shrunk by nearly 80 per cent.
Store owners in Hubballi are wringing their hands as they have maintained huge stocks of the products after anticipating strong demand throughout the pandemic.
A Pankaj, who owns a medical store in Gokul Road area, said that many people had become lax about Covid-19 precautions, avoiding wearing masks and sanitising their hands frequently, and this had resulted in poor sales. “People have almost stopped buying sanitisers,” he said.
Another store owner, Sridhar, said that in the initial months of the pandemic, people scrambled to buy safety products. “They used to buy any brand. We sold a huge number of sanitiser bottles in April and May. Now, there is variety in the market, but no one is buying it,” he said. Mask sales are also down.
