Throwback Thursday: Johnson Music to Wool Market & DIY School

Throwback Thursday: Johnson Music to Wool Market & DIY School
Steve Harmon
Today's installment of "Throwback Thursday" takes us to the four hundred block of North Main Street on the east side. In 1949, 420 N. Main St. was McCormick Craft Co. but it closed that year. George L. Johnson had just bought out the stock of the old Veatch Music on East 2nd Ave. and needed a larger showroom. George purchased the 420 N. Main St. building and opened The Hutchinson Music Center there in 1950. In 1963, George partnered up with Fred Hurst and they both continued together there until 1975, when Fred passed away. That's when Craig Johnson became part of the business. George then phased out of the business and retired in 1980. In 1981, the business ownership became Craig Johnson President and Mike Johnson Sec. /Treas. and the name was changed to Johnson Music Center. The first photo shows the business change in 1980. Johnson Music Center closed in 2016 with Craig's retirement. In 2017, Andrea Springer & Steve Snook purchased the property and remodeled the building to open the Wool Market and DIY School in August of 2018. The second photo shows the building today at 420 N. Main St. The property is owned by Mystery S. Properties L.L.C.
