Most international students, including Indians, starting courses at British universities this month will no longer be able to bring family members under tougher UK visa norms effective from Monday.

The Czech government extended temporary controls on the country's border with Slovakia on Wednesday until Feb. 2, Interior Minister Vit Rakusan said, maintaining the measures set up to fight illegal migration. The Czech Republic, along with Germany, Poland and Austria, introduced the controls in September and October as the numbers of migrants crossing into richer western European countries grew. "We are reacting to situation in neighbouring countries that are also extending (checks)," Rakusan said.

The UK Home Office said the changes are aimed at clamping down on people using the student visa as a backdoor route to work in the UK and will see an estimated 140,000 fewer people come to the UK
