India recently became the fastest 5G rollout nation in the world. The countrys top two carriers, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, have collectively splurged around $25 billion in buying 5G airwaves and launching their next-generation wireless broadband services. Between them, they have 165 million 5G customers. But neither of them has seen any serious monetisation of their 5G businesses even 18 months after they introduced next-gen networks.
"The 5G rollout has been very good. It has set world records with the fastest 5G rollout. But having said that, I'm a little constrained to say that the revenues for the telecom industry have not picked up," Kochhar said. He said a huge amount of capital expenditure is being invested to roll out these networks."The private players who are rolling this out definitely expect the return on that. That unfortunately is not happening on the scale as which it should. 5G rollout has brought in 4-5 large entities who are consuming 80 per cent of telecom networks bandwidth but not paying revenue," Kochhar said.
5G telecom services are set to be rolled out in selected cities in India in 2022. The cities which are set to get the 5G telecom services in 2022 include Gurugram, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Delhi, and more.
