With Spurt In Covid-19 Cases, India To Cut Down On Vaccine Export Globally: Gavi

With a sudden surge in Covid-19 cases in India, the country is now likely to make available a smaller number of vaccines to the rest of the world, the head of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation has said.
Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi in an interview to CBS News said, “India is, by volume, the largest supplier of vaccines for the developing world. Because of the new wave of outbreaks in India right now, the Indian government has stepped up their vaccination programmes, and that has meant that they've required more doses, which means that they've made less doses available for the rest of the world.” “We had expected, in March and April, about 90 million doses, and we suspect we'll get much, much less than that, and that is a problem,” he said.

Vaccine drive: 1.91 lakh of target 3 lakh healthcare workers vaccinated on Day 1

As many as 1,91,181 people were administered the coronavirus vaccine on Saturday. According to sources, the government had set the target of vaccinating 3 lakh people on Day 1 of the vaccine drive.
According to a statement issued by the Central government, the vaccinations were conducted with two Made-in-India vaccines. 16,755 personnel administered the vaccine over 3,352 sessions to 1,91,181 beneficiaries in the massive nationwide program. Additional 3,429 beneficiaries were vaccinated in Defence institutions. As per the statement, no case of post-vaccination hospitalisation was reported.

AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Singh Guleria and NITI Aayog member VK Paul were administered the coronavirus vaccine shot at AIIMS Hospital in Delhi on Saturday.
Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan tweeted, "So that people will have faith! In my presence AIIMS, Delhi Director Dr. Randeep Guleria Ji also got the corona vaccine. Certainly this initiative will instill confidence in the people that this vaccine is safe and it should be administered to every beneficiary without any doubt."

The Union Health Ministry on Thursday issued a set of rules for states and Union Territories to follow during the coronavirus vaccination drive, which will start on Saturday.
In a letter, Additional Health Secretary Manohar Agnani said that only those above the age of 18 years should be given the shots and the interchangeability of the vaccines was not permitted. India has approved two vaccines for emergency use.
