The Metis Nation of Ontario is feeling positive as substantial investments were made in the recent federal budget that aligns with their goals.
MNO President Margaret Froh says programming support in one specific area will go a long way in improving the quality of life for Metis children and families across the province.
“An additional two and a half billion dollars committed to enhanced existing distinction-based approaches to indigenous early learning and child care, which is going to be huge,” says Froh.
She also welcomes Canada’s commitment to co-develop the Action Plan to implement legislation on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Today, Gimma Craig Nootchtai of Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, Chief Larry Roque of Wahnapitae First Nation, Chief Chad Boissoneau of Mattagami First Nation and Marc G. Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources, on behalf of the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Indigenous Services, highlighted community-led solutions undertaken to prepare, prevent and respond to COVID-19 in these communities.

Additional Federal Funding to Support Indigenous Communities’ COVID-19 Response
During a news conference on Parliament Hill, Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller provides an update on the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic, focusing on its impact on Indigenous communities in Canada and on vaccine distribution in these communities. He is joined by Valerie Gideon (Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, Indigenous Services Canada) and Dr. Tom Wong (Chief Medical Officer of Public Health, Indigenous Services Canada). Minister Miller announces an additional $1.2 billion in funding to support the public-health response to COVID-19 in Indigenous communities. The federal government is also injecting $380 million into the Indigenous Community Support Fund. (January 13, 2021)
