Musk was possibly referring to India’s Information Technology Rules, 2021, under which a senior representative of social media companies – called the chief compliance officer – can be potentially jailed for violating the norms.
A senior government official said this composition would likely assuage concerns from critics about the Fact Check Unit’s potential lack of expertise. “The unit will be supported by designated nodal officers from other ministries,” the official said.
Kamra in the petition has sought the court to declare the amended rules as unconstitutional and a direction to the government to restrain from taking action against any individual under the rules.
The state’s assembly had passed the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Ordinance, 2022 last October. However, in early March, the Governor RN Ravi had returned the ordinance for reconsideration.
