In-ovo Sexing Technologies Could Spare Millions Of Chicks - If New Zealand Follows Germany's Lead

On Wednesday, Germany’s Cabinet approved legislation
that will prohibit the practice of killing newly hatched
male chicks from 1 January next year.
Instead, Germany
will use in-ovo gender technology, which enables egg
producers to test the sex of embryos inside the egg during
the early stages of incubation.
SAFE Campaigns Manager
Jessica Chambers said New Zealand needs to adopt these
technologies, so it doesn t fall behind.
Every year
around four million day-old male chicks are killed in New
Zealand because they’re considered unwanted by-products by
the egg industry, said Chambers.

ORC Flood Alert Service Survey Closing Soon

An Otago Regional Council (ORC) Flood Alert Service
survey which began in December 2020 will close at the end of
January.
The survey aims to find out how best to
communicate with Otago residents about flood information and
updates. While the survey has been open since before
flooding at the start of January, such weather events are a
good reminder of the importance of effective tools for
informing the public.
ORC is asking the communities
across Otago if they are aware of the flood alert service,
and whether they find the service useful if they are

is calling out Mayor Phil Goff
for his undignified comment that the claim made by
Councillor Greg Sayers asking why Auckland Council is
funding yoga classes is
“bullshit.”
Yesterday, Councillor Greg
Sayers penned an opinion piece questioning why ratepayers
were paying for yoga classes, among other services.
Responding to Heather du Plessis-Allan, who asked if
ratepayers were indeed funding yoga classes, Mr Goff
declared “
no no, look it’s all bullshit. It’s
patently false.”
