OPINION | A new approach to circumcision is needed if deaths are to be avoided
The initiation season in SA brings yet another bitter moment featuring what appears to be a pattern of initiates perishing at the hands of “bogus custodians” of what was once a sacred and a respected rite of passage among Nguni people of the Eastern Cape. As the country reflects on which dominant social, economic, political and environmental challenges to deal and improve on, dysfunctional traditional male circumcision remains a relentless thorn in the flesh.
