An attorney says the state of West Virginia has agreed to pay $4 million to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by inmates over jail conditions.
The Los Angeles Superior Court is wiping out money bail for many crimes. Evidence shows this makes the public safer, but people who should know better are likely to offer fact-free commentary about the change.
The settlement came after a nearly 50-year legal battle between Los Angeles County and the ACLU over prison conditions.
“This is a watershed moment for the ACLU’s jail and prison decarceration movement,” Corene Kendrick, deputy director, ACLU National Prison Project, said.
In the proposed settlement, the county agreed to limits on how long detainees can be held at the inmate reception center and handcuffed or tethered to chairs and benches there.
