The giant lacewing was commonly found in eastern North America but mysteriously disappeared in the 1950s.
The Polystoechotes punctata (giant lacewing) is the first ever of its kind to be recorded in Arkansas and is the first ever to be recorded in eastern North America in over 50 years after being extirpated due to unknown reasons.
The giant bug was found during a trip to Walmart in 2012: "I put it in my hand and did the rest of my shopping with it between my fingers. I got home...and promptly forgot about it for almost a decade."
The giant lacewing found at an Arkansas Walmart is now housed at Penn State, where scientists and students have access to it for more research.
A teacher who spotted the bug took it home - then realised during a class how unusual it was.
