Nonprofit universities often pay the towns that host them in lieu of property tax. Students say selective institutions with big endowments should do more. Two Ivy League universities recently renewed agreements to voluntarily pay their surrounding cities sizable sums to help compensate for the fact that, as nonprofits, they don’t pay property taxes. And while some community members see the payments as generous and beneficial, students are among their harshest critics, arguing that the wealthy universities are capable of paying their host cities much more.

The Pennsylvania liberal arts college recently made headlines for closing its literary journal. Professors say they now fear more cuts. Gettysburg College recently confirmed it’s shuttering its namesake literary magazine after more than 30 years of publication. But laying off editors may be just part of a broader shake-up for the private institution’s employees, which is raising faculty members’ concerns about their students’ education and their own employment.

From Georgia to Wisconsin, state university systems are adopting the experimental policy, hoping to boost enrollment and reach new students. The newly rebranded Universities of Wisconsin announced the launch of a direct admissions initiative last week at 10 of the system’s 13 universities.
