Tamil Nadu plans to add 5,000 MW to its wind power capacity by 2023 in order to regain its position as the top wind power state, which it lost to Gujarat. The state also intends to implement a policy for repowering old wind turbines. Of the 5,000 MW, 4,400 MW will be installed by new private players, while 600 MW will be an expansion of existing windmill owners. Currently, Tamil Nadu has an installed wind energy capacity of 10,225 MW, while Gujarat has surpassed it with 10,890 MW.
