5 March 2021 There’s a lot riding on predictions of the future, when it comes to climate. In Australia, the future of coal is mostly a debate about whether its demise is fast, or slow. For the country’s gas-fired power generation, the debate is slightly more complicated. The government, for instance, believes that Australia ought to be building new gas-fired power stations, in order to buttress grid reliability and “affordability”. 1,000 megawatts of new gas in the Hunter Valley is erroneously justified on the grounds that it is “required” to ensure reliable provision of electrici...
2 March 2021 The Australian Energy Market Operator may abandon plans to model a ‘gas led recovery’ scenario as part of its 2022 Integrated System Plan, after a proposal to model the Morrison government’s gas market ambitions vision was widely panned by key energy market stakeholders as being unrealistic. In briefing materials distributed to energy market stakeholders ahead of a workshop on Wednesday, and seen by RenewEconomy, AEMO suggests it will instead model a “zero net emissions” scenario as part of the next edition of the Integrated System Plan, its 20-year planning blueprint, ...
26 February 2021 New renewable energy zones and dispatchable energy storage infrastructure have been added to an influential government list of high priority infrastructure priorities, recognised for their importance in a post-Covid Australian economy. The 2021 Infrastructure Priority List, published by the federal government agency Infrastructure Australia, has seen a number of projects focused on the clean energy transition listed as high priority initiatives. The latest edition of the list, published on Friday, sees the creation of new renewable energy zones, the addition of dispatchable e...
23 February 2021 Poles and wires owner Spark Infrastructure has continued its foray into generation, purchasing development rights to a string of new renewable energy projects with a collective capacity of 1.5 gigawatts. The announcement comes after the company opened its first 100 megawatt solar farm last year. Spark says it has earmarked $1.15 billion to invest in new solar, wind and battery projects, and is even having “a look at” green hydrogen. Chief executive Rick Francis said the company had paid for the development rights, but had made no final commitment to go ahead with any of t...
