Underlying medical conditions and COVID-19 vaccines: When getting a coronavirus shot may not be advisable

TORONTO
With the approval of the one-shot vaccine from Johnson & Johnson, Canadians now have four COVID-19 vaccine options that have been tested by researchers and carefully scrutinized by regulators.
The vaccines are considered safe, but even pharmaceuticals approved for widespread use are sometimes not appropriate for people with certain allergies or other medical conditions. However, experts consulted by CTVNews.ca say there are very few situations where not taking the vaccine would be the better option.
WHAT ALLERGIES ARE A CONCERN?
With vaccines – as with other pharmaceuticals – there is always a chance of a minor adverse reaction, such as minor pain or swelling at the injection site. But there is also a small risk of a more severe anaphylactic reaction to an ingredient, such as to polyethylene glycol (PEG), which is present in the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.  ....

Behind Tayyibe Demirel s olive groves in southwest Turkey lies a vast, grey expanse, stripped bare by a coal mine eating into the rolling hillside. On the horizon, heavy smoke billows from three giant chimneys of the power plant by the town of Yatagan.
Determined to save her land and village, Demirel, a 64-year-old grandmother, has singlehandedly taken on the operators extending the mine to feed what is one of Turkey s largest power plants.

New Iceland: Drawing parallels between the COVID-19 pandemic and smallpox

TORONTO
As COVID-19 vaccinations arrive on home soil and into the arms of Canadians, one historian says the pandemic draws stark parallels to the smallpox epidemic that devastated one Manitoba community 145 years ago.
In 1876 in Riverton, Man., formerly known as New Iceland, one community was hit particularly hard by the smallpox outbreak that took the lives of hundreds of people, many of whom in the community were Indigenous.
“It had a huge impact. As the virus started moving around through the community, I think there was 1,000 people – over 100 people died,” Elva Simundsson, an Icelandic-Canadian historian, said in an interview with CTV National News. ....
