Tidal surge, that s the problem they re having here. we know in wrightsville beach, we can t get in there now, the bridge remains closed. only first responders can get through due to high winds. tropical storm force winds. some gusts are very high. we know there is some flooding coming from intercoastal or from the atlantic ocean. that we have seen from imagery coming from the wrightsville beach area. but the authorities have said because of high winds, they can t go out and investigate. they say there is some structural damage and especially on atlantic side, beach erosion. it is hitting the coastal communities of north carolina. on the drive out here as you ve seen from other reports, there s extensive tree damage, structural damage, power lines down in wilmington area. it is a storm that s apparently not going to let up anytime ....

reporter: let me be clear, don, we are right at the edge of the intercoastal and wrightsville beach begins on the other side. we can t get there because the bridge is closed. it is closed because of the fact we re still dealing with very high winds. probably not hurricane, tropical storm i would say. every now and then gusts are really strong. we have been dealing with this for 24 hours now, the wind load on buildings as nick was pointing out is a marathon kind of thing. they can take it for awhile. but when you start talking about a full day and beyond, the weak n nls weaknesses will show up. we are looking at the water at wrightsville beach. we can t see far inland. we know from talking to authorities there that there is tidal flooding occurring in there. it seemed to happen around mid morning this morning when we were approaching high tide. looks like there s still water ....

As you know, wrightsville beach is where this storm first made landfall, 7:15 a.m. this morning. martin safrbage is there, we had problems communicating with him before. i want to check in, see if we can talk to him now. martin, what s the situation there? i m wondering if you were on the air or awake at 7:15, what it was like when it made landfall? we were awake. we were aware. the impact was strong. i will tell you that you do not see where we are significant damage in wrightsville beach, but let me put a caveat to that. we re just before the bridge. we can t go any farther because law enforcement has that bridge closed, and that means that right now, you just can t go in to see. but from looking across, when there was a lull, you did not see significant damage to either the many vessels that are there or the homes and businesses along the intercoastal. it s probably a very different ....

This area. they have problems with inundation. they have water coming in from the intercoastal, they also have it coming from the atlantic. they also have significant beach erosion on the side. not surprising given what s going on. on top of that, there s structural damage. it s very hard to assess how bad things are because they ve been hunkered down. we can t get over there because the bridge to get to the barrier island remains off limits to members of the public. it is considered too dangerous at this time. but again, here we are 10 hours after landfall, and you hardly feel any significant letdown of the conditions out here. it s likely we ll go through another high tide tonight which means another strong surge, and the rain, well, you heard it over and over. as the deaths have now shown, this is still a dangerous, dangerous storm, and this is why people were told to evacuate and remain in shelter in spite of ....

Anyone out and about has a pretty decent chance of getting injured. tease are the conditions people are facing as they try if they try to get out of here. falling trees, falling limbs. we re going to pull over here. i ll show you some of the dangers here. this is why more than 150,000 customers in north carolina are without power. you open to the door to your car like i m doing, the wind is going to whip you around. this is again illustrative of the all dangers people are going to face if they try to go around these roads. we have gown through several of these rural roads right by the intercoastal waterway and i can tell you it s gotten worse just in the last half-hour. just because they ve downgraded this to a category 1, i mean we re just getting pounded by a gust right now, and these trees above me could be in danger of falling. so again in these rural areas right by the intercoastal you ve got the storm surge on the one ....
