Art Bridges Climate Change and Action, Says Invisible Dust Director

Art has the opportunity to make challenging topics, such as reports about the climate change crisis, more "emotional" for everyday people, Kasia Molga, an artist and the founder and creative director of art workshop Studio Molga, said during Insider's "Act to Impact: Keeping our Promises to the Planet" event on Tuesday.
The United Nations has labeled climate change "one of the most pressing issues of our time." But according to Molga, it may be hard for some people to feel personally impacted by this global issue if they're just reading research and news reports about the topic, which often don't provide an emotional connection to the problem at hand.

Insider Sustainability: Sign up for Our New Biweekly Newsletter

Just over three years ago, Insider launched Better Capitalism, a section focused on how companies are moving beyond financial targets and actively contributing to a better world for their employees, customers, and other stakeholders.
Sustainability has been a key topic we've covered along the way, and it's only gaining momentum in the conversation around stakeholder capitalism. Last year, Microsoft, Apple, Ford, Starbucks, and other major corporations made big pledges to reduce, eliminate, or offset their carbon emissions. In January of this year, GM announced it would only sell electric vehicles by 2035 and pledged to be completely carbon neutral by 2040.
At the same time, the demand for ESG investing — which integrates environmental, social, and governance goals with investment — has skyrocketed, while more companies have agreed to report on their progress on ESG criteria.

Plans for controversial 'unfinished' sculpture with climate change message in grounds of Whitby Abbey withdrawn

The creations were described as dolos shaped, reminiscent of a concrete structure that is used as a barrier to prevent coastal erosion.
The sculpture will only be “finished”, however, when it snows according to the supporting documents submitted as part of two planning applications to Scarborough Council as the work intends to make a statement about climate change.
Last week, however, almost 90 complaints flooded into the council from residents in Whitby about the “eyesore” structure.
On Friday, it was confirmed that the plans for the Whitby installation had been withdrawn but the sculpture at Scarborough Castle is still going through the planning process and has had no objections.

Scarborough Museums Trust joins nationwide scheme to address climate change

Scarborough is one of the 13 museum's taking part
The No Going Back Peer Learning Programme is run by the Happy Museum Project, an Arts Council England-funded programme which looks at how the museum sector can respond to the challenge of creating a more sustainable future.
The programme builds on the particular power of museums to draw on past stories of rapid transition and transformation, and aims to inspire museums and their communities to shape new stories and actions to address the climate and ecological emergency. The teams will work as a community of practice to explore and shape ideas; to offer and receive review and feedback, and to refine their thinking and working.
