Firefighters extinguish blaze at Ronald Township residence Sentinel Staff RONALD TWP.  Firefighters responded to a house fire northeast of Ionia around noon Wednesday.  Ronald Township firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire at 12:01 p.m. June 16 in the 5900 block of Westbrook Road, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page. Upon arrival, units  found smoke showing from the single-story residence. Firefighters located and extinguished the fire near the stairwell next to the basement and followed with salvage and overhaul.   There was extension in the walls and floor,  but most damage was limited, according to the Ronald Township Fire Department. 

Ionia County Central Dispatch Director Jim Valentine to retire

Ionia Sentinel-Standard IONIA  After more than four decades in public safety, Jim Valentine has decided to call it a career. Valentine is retiring as Ionia County Central Dispatch director on May 14. Valentine has served in the position since January 2009.  “It was time,” Valentine told The Sentinel-Standard. “I’ve been in public safety for 46 years. It’s time to retire and move on.”  Valentine started his career with the Lake Odessa Police Department for more than eight years as a patrol officer and sergeant.  He then worked for the Lowell Police Department for 26 years. He worked as a patrol officer and detective before spending the last 14 years as police chief.  

Multiple agencies respond to house fire in Portland

Multiple agencies respond to house fire in Portland Sentinel Staff PORTLAND  Multiple emergency and first responder crews responded to a house fire early Wednesday.  The Portland Area Fire Authority was dispatched to a large residential structure fire before 7 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, in the 400 block of West Grand River Avenue in Portland.  There were no injuries in the fire, but the home is a total loss, according to the PAFA.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.  Portland Ambulance, the Portland Police Department, the Portland Department of Public Works, Portland Electric, the Lyons-Muir Fire Department, the Berlin-Orange Fire Department, the Westphalia Township Fire Department, the Pewamo Fire Department, the Sunfield Fire Department, the Ionia Department of Public Safety, Ionia County Victim Advocates, American Red Cross, Ionia County Sheriff’s Office and Ionia County Central Dispatch assisted the PAFA at the scene.

Man injured in Otisco Township motorcycle crash

Man injured in Otisco Township motorcycle crash Sentinel Staff OTISCO TWP.  An Orleans man was taken to the hospital after his motorcycle overturned Sunday in Otisco Township, according to the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office.  Ionia County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the crash involving a motorcycle at 12:25 p.m. Sunday, April 18, at the intersection of Belding Road (M-44) and Storey Road (M-91) in Otisco Township.   The investigation showed a 51-year-old Orleans man was traveling west on Belding Road and attempted to avoid a vehicle in front of him. He lost control of the motorcycle, driving off the roadway and overturning.
