Subscriber only HAVING won three Gold jackets in a row, accomplished cricketer Harry Wood is a fine choice as a local hero . That s a new role Wood will fulfil in coming weeks having joined the Western Power franchise fielding a range of teams in the newly-formed Brisbane Premier League (BPL) T20 competition. With strong Ipswich ties and a proud country heritage, Laidley-bred Wood will encourage junior cricketers and help promote Western Power in the inaugural five-week amateur series starting in August. While yet to decide if he will play in the BPL, the Ipswich Hornets most consistent batsman appreciated another prestigious honour.

Subscriber only HAVING spent so much time at his second home, Brett Kitching enjoys sharing why the Ipswich Turf Club is such an important part of his life. The racing hub has provided almost daily experiences from when he was brought up just down the road at Ebbw Vale and he attended Bundamba primary and high schools. I remember many days hanging over the fence watching the races from the primary school, or from the top level of the high school looking out over the course on midweek race days, Kitching said. Ipswich was always the centre of my universe. I even initially thought the 1971 Melbourne Cup, won by the grey Silver Knight, was run at Bundamba when I hung over the school fence at lunchtime on the first Tuesday of November and saw a grey horse win the lunchtime race.
Brett Kitching TODAY was not only the final Ipswich race day for 2020 but my last edition of this column as I am soon galloping off to retirement. It has been a great joy to report on thoroughbred racing in Ipswich and to work with The Queensland Times. The paper for many years has played a huge role in supporting Ipswich thoroughbred racing and helping to maintain the prominence of the Ipswich Cup. Special mentions for guiding this column and providing insight go to Peter Foley and of course David Lems, the positive, passionate sports enthusiast who has been of enormous assistance to the club over his 36 years at the QT.
