Galaxy S2 (2011) receives unofficial Android 11 update

Galaxy S2 (2011) receives unofficial Android 11 update
The smartphone market was much different nine years ago. Apple was still collecting the fruits as a predominant smartphone company, while other companies were trying to catch with a still lackluster Android OS. Samsung was in the beginning of a successful route that took it to the lead of the smartphone market. In 2011, the company unveiled its “flagship” dubbed Galaxy S2, or Galaxy SII if you prefer. The device arrived at the Mobile World Congress in February 2011 as a direct sequel to the original Galaxy S.

The handset debuted with the non-appealing Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The device got Android 4.1.2 as its last official update. You may think that all Galaxy S2 units out there are buried and left behind. Nah, this isn’t the case when you have an active Android community full of enthusiasts. The device is popular among developers and over 9 years after its released, som ....

December 21, 2020
Almost a decade after its release, if you’re still holding onto a Samsung Galaxy S II, you can now give it a new lease of life and use it to tinker with Android 11. Yeah, that’s right! Curtesy LineageOS 18.1, you can now unofficially run Android 11 on the second-generation Samsung smartphone that launched with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and if you still have one in working condition – it would be running the outdated Jelly Bean OS.
The LineageOS 18.1 developed by XDA Members works with the Galaxy S II, model number GT-I9100. It is not really full proof at the moment, which means it has some glitches and wouldn’t be recommended if you’re for some reason using the Galaxy S II as a daily driver. Go for the port only if you know what you’re doing. ....

9-year-old Samsung Galaxy S2 Gets Android 11
Samsung Galaxy S2, stylized as Galaxy S II, was launched in 2011 with Android 2.3 and was later upgraded to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. Over the years, the smartphone grew in popularity with the developers’ community, and for that sole reason, Android 11 has been unofficially made available for the handset.
Smartphone companies offer up to 3 years of software updates at most. Hence, the news that Galaxy S2 from 2011 can run Android 11 after nine years from its launch is pretty exciting, considering that Android 11 is yet to come on several flagship phones released this year.
The upgrade for Galaxy S2 comes as an unofficial port of LineageOS 18.1 courtesy of several XDA Senior Members such as rINanDO, ChronoMonochrome, and others. The ROM is compliant with Isolated Recovery (IsoRec). Hence, it can be directly flashed via Odin, a utility software used by Samsung internally. However, to successfully load the ROM, users will hav ....
