A pro-democracy and human rights group, Take It Back Movement (TIB) has asked the Nigeria Police Force to immediately release Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ).   The group made the call in a post shared on its X account, describing the detention of Ojukwu by the Nigerian authorities as a means to suppress critics in the country.  

The African Action Congress (AAC) has accused the Chairman of the Gwagwalada Area Council, Alhaji Abubakar Jibrin Giri of incompetence and lack of direction in piloting the affairs of the council. The party disclosed this at the weekend in Abuja during a public hearing and launch of ‘Operation Hutu Dole Campaign’ organised by the Gwagwalada chapter of the party. The party also vowed to take over the area council in the next election, saying it is time to rescue the council and inject fresh ideas to move the area forward.  

    Residents of Iwerekun and other coastal communities in Ajah in the Eti-Osa local government area of Lagos State have lamented facing the risk of being homeless following the threat of an imminent demolition in the area. The Nigerian Government has started a 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway which will pass through several communities, leading to demolitions. The Lagos State Government had disclosed its intention to start removing illegal building extensions and attachments across the state.  

  Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has said the state government will compensate residents affected by its Circular Road Project. This comes days after the Take It Back Movement held a meeting with the victims of the road project. According to the group, the project “displaced 360 villages and over five million people”. Governor Makinde visited the site on April 10, 2023, after the Take It Back Movement’s advocacy and mobilization efforts, which highlighted the plight of the displaced residents and called for action from the government.

Human rights organisation Take It Back Movement has lamented an attempt by the Oyo State Government to take ownership of people’s land for its Circular Road Project.   The organisation described it as an “egregious violation of the rights of the people”.
