Meel Patthar Review | Meel Patthar Hindi Movie Review by Sreejith Mullappilly

Ivan Ayr's Meel Patthar(Milestone) is a beautifully realized film about a lonely truck driver. Full of tracking shots and long conversations, this slow-burner of a film works as a compelling portrayal of a trucker's life and an uncompromising look at old age. Ayr's film requires patient viewing, but it is ultimately rewarding.

Suvinder Vicky plays truck driver Ghalib in Ivan Ayr's Netflix film Meel Patthar/Milestone. Most of Ghalib's life is spent behind the wheels. In trucking terms, that means 500,000 kilometers on the roads. A coworker tells Ghalib that it is the first time someone has ever clocked the 500,000-mark in the firm. Still, Ghalib does not celebrate the occasion. He does not even show any emotion on hearing the news.

Where the quiet speaks: In conversation with 'Milestone' director Ivan Ayr - Leisure News

Plots are not essential to filmmaker Ivan Ayr’s independent films. Characters, instead, take centre stage. In his acclaimed debut, Soni, a hot-headed Delhi police officer navigates a rigged system. Ghalib, the trucker protagonist of his second film, Milestone, is quieter. Writing dialogues, says Ayr, doesn’t come easily to him. He would rather let the hardened faces and drab spaces speak for themselves. The filmmaker credits Haruki Murakami as an influence, which explains his tendency to model characters as “reticent and passive”.
In Milestone—which, like Soni, is also a Netflix release—Ayr zooms in on Ghalib, a recent widower devoted to his back-breaking work. He would easily fit into the world of Chloé Zhao’s Oscar-winning film Nomadland, a film which, in part, documents the time a widow spends in her van. “Truckers are modern nomads,” says Ayr, who interviewed many in Delhi for his research. “I like to think of them as the backbone of our capitalistic system and also as people who are the biggest victims of it.” In Milestone, Ayr wanted to highlight the paradox of men who navigate long distances but personally struggle to get “anywhere in life”. “They are stuck within the small compartment and also in life.”

Milestone review: A sombre, yet reflective take on the devastated working class, through the modern Ghalib

Milestone review: A sombre, yet reflective take on the devastated working class, through the modern Ghalib
An exquisitely crafted film, Milestone (Meel Patthar) is like a dark chocolate—exquisite but an acquired taste
“I do my job because it is my identity. But the constraint is that it is my only identity”. A grieving labour-class man pouring out his helplessness to his master through these words might sound bleak. But unfortunately it is the bitter truth about our unhealthy social constructs. It's ironic that the class, which forms the base of our social pyramid, is the one that has its back bent by the weight of those above them. Very poetic in its delivery, Ivan Ayr’s new release Meel Patthar (Milestone) is a profoundly thought provoking film of its own kind-- one that gives you a lived experience of being from the strata of the lower working-class over a span of 98 minutes.

Ivan Ayr's second feature film opens to nothingness. A black screen stares at you for nearly 30 seconds, almost preparing you for the immersive experience ahead. It is as if Ayr lets you absorb a bit of the bleakness that would seem to define his protagonist Ghalib's life over the next 98-odd minutes.
Ghalib is a truck driver, portrayed with understated angst by Punjabi actor Suvinder Vicky (he was Joginder in "Chauthi Koot", for ready reference, among other impressive roles). As the narrative opens, Ghalib is asked to load goods in his vehicle by the depot supervisor. He tries telling he has a bad back, but doesn't argue on being ignored.

"The details were important. In fact, even the seat had a hard cushion. Then came the part of ensuring that I was not 'acting'. Everything had to be in a certain undertone contrary to the loud image of truck drivers portrayed in most films. The audience was to be trusted too --- that they would understand the pauses. Adopting a certain body language and conveying with the eyes... It was a fantastic experience," smiles actor Suvinder Vicky, who played the lead role of the truck driver 'Ghalib' in Ivan Ayr's recently premiered film 'Milestone' on Netflix, for which he also won the award for Best Performance at the 31st Singapore International Film Festival last year.

Ivan Ayr's second feature touches on dark themes but doesn't go deep enough

Milestone, a new Netflix original directed by Ivan Ayr, I was reminded of the films of the great Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami. This story about an aging truck driver facing redundancy whilst grieving for his wife attempts the still mood and loneliness that Kiarostami favoured in his quiet epics.
