Dhaka, May 13 : A top Hefazat-e-Islam militant has pleaded guilty to his involvement in the violent riots that erupted across Bangladesh during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi s visit to Dhaka in March.

Militant outfit Hefazat-e-Islam, which was behind the recent unrest in Bangladesh, has a sub-group called Manhazi , whose members include some who had trained in Afghanistan , a senior police officer said on Tuesday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police s Joint Commissioner, Mahbub Alam also told IANS that banned terror group Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJI) was also showing signs of activity.
According to officials, since the early 1980s, many people went from Bangladesh to Afghanistan to join the Al Qaeda fighting against the Soviet Army. There is no accurate count of how many, mostly madarsa teachers and students, had gone theere, but the rise of militancy in Bangladesh in the 1990s was spurred on by these fighters returning home.

Mufti Harun Izhar, education and cultural affairs secretary of the now-dissolved central committee of Hefazat-e-Islam, has been arrested over the violence during the Indian prime minister s visit last month.
Rab officials picked him up from Jamiyatul Ulum Al Islamia Madrasa, known as Lalkhan Bazar madrasa, in Chattogram early yesterday.
RAB-7 Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Moshiour Rahman Jewel told The Daily Star, We detained Harun Izhar after his involvement was found in the violence in Hathazari on March 26 during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
