Opinion, be leading this operation in libya? well, couple of things to that. number one, we shouldn t be involved at all. there is no interest sufficient in libya to justify risking american lives and employing our military there. if we are going to do it, i guess we re going to have to be in command because the way we have our assets set up and the fact that we have so many of different kinds really means there s nobody else who can do it. unless you have ships like mt. whitney, you have awax, j-stars, variety of assets and aircraft, it s hard for anybody else to do it. i don t think the brits or french can do it. they certainly can t sustain it for very long even if they could. richard, let me ask you your take on that. you know, it s interesting because the obama administration finds itself in a huge dilemma. in an attempt to try to be all things to all people, they have really been successful in making everybody angry at them. the left and the right. they came into this try ....
Begun. off the top, i want your thoughts on the announcement we just heard, 110 tomahawk missiles launched, 20 different air defense systems targeted along the coast. what is your thoughts? it s typical beginning of an operation to stop an air defense capability. they probably went after command and control. i would expect they will go after any of the fighters that are still capable in libya. then, of course, you have all sorts of special sensitive analysiss, j-stars, satellites and those cameras on the front end of the tomahawks that will be fed into stutgart, they are going to be able to look at what they hit and decided whether add my lacks and other types of munitions are necessary. i have to ask you this ....
That nato has taken over the lead from the united states? t.j., it will look a lot like it has in the last 48 hours where the u.s. is no longer flying these patrol missions to make sure that no one is flying in the area or there are no surface-to-air missiles being fired. but you are going to see a continued u.s. presence. that s because there are some unique capabilities that really only the u.s. can really provide to this effort. take a look. we can kind of run down a few of them. the first is the global hawk. an unmanned plane that can stay in the air at high altitude for long periods of time. it gives surveillance over the area. also there s something called j-stars which allow the allies to get an idea of what armor is on the ground, tanks, things like that. finally there are these planes called growlers. those also will be used to sort of jam signals and jam some of the electronic communication ....
