Joburg's first post-apartheid mayor Isaac Mogase dies

Former Johannesburg mayor, MP and ANC chief whip in Parliament Isaac Mogase died on Tuesday.
The cause of his death could not immediately be confirmed.
Current Mayor Geoffrey Makhubo described Mogase as a "trailblazer".
The first post-apartheid Johannesburg mayor, Isaac Mogase, has died.
Mogase wore the mayoral chain of the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Council between 1995 and 2000, before the election of Amos Masondo.
Mogase died on Tuesday. The cause of his death could not immediately be confirmed.
Current Mayor Geoffrey Makhubo described Mogase as a "trailblazer".
"We stand on the shoulders of giants like Ntate Mogase [for] their hard work and dedication to the people and development of this great city. Ntate Mogase was pivotal in laying the groundwork for the work we have done of stitching the city together and creating a one-city-one-tax-base for a united city," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

JOHANNESBURG – The family of the late Jacqueline Mofokeng said she and her daughter would be laid to rest in a private funeral over the weekend, which would be attended by close members of the family.
Mofokeng passed away from COVID-19 related complications on Thursday at her home in Irene, Pretoria.
The 62-year-old lost her battle with the coronavirus, a day after her daughter, Thato Mofokeng, also succumbed to COVID-19 in hospital.

She died a day after her daughter Thato died.
The cause of death is still unknown, but the ANC's Gauteng legislature chief whip pointed that the deaths could be related to Covid-19.
ANC MP Jacqueline Mofokeng died on Thursday - a day after the death of her daughter Thato.
In a statement, ANC chief whip Pemmy Majodina said she received the news of Mofokeng's death on Thursday.
Mofokeng became an MP in the Sixth Parliament in 2019 and served on the Joint Constitutional Review Committee, the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence, the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services and the Portfolio Committee on Police.
