Paleontologists working in northern Alaska have discovered a tiny fossil mammal that thrived in what may have been among the coldest conditions on Earth about 73 million years ago.
The “furry critter” is estimated to have weighed less than an empty can of soda, or less than half an ounce, a university said.
Roughly 73 million years ago, dinosaurs like tyrannosaurs and hadrosaurs lived among conifer trees in northern Alaska. The region was also home to a much smaller creature—a tiny mammal that weathered months of darkness and freezing temperatures in the winter.
