Some families of Pike River victims are calling for stronger laws for companies after charges against the owners of Whakaari/White Island were dismissed.
The company managing the volcano said it had no presence on the volcanic island, so was not liable for operations that put the public at risk.
The Whakaari / White Island trial is now down to one defendant - the rest have either been found guilty or had their charges dismissed.

Thirteen parties were originally charged by WorkSafe in November 2020.
The two booking agents accused of health and safety failings in the White Island trial are applying to have their charges dismissed. Earlier this week the owners of White Island had theirs dismissed.
