To a community long hungry for investment, the attention of a developer who sees your potential can be a blessing. Fifteen years ago, that community was New Britain and the developer was Avner Krohn. Krohn’s company, Jasko Development, took a long-neglected building on Main Street and renovated it into a mix of first-floor retail and luxury apartments above. Jasko also renovated the Rao and Raphael buildings into mixed use.

Despite the rocky path for office buildings since the pandemic began, developer Avner Krohn - known for huge apartment complexes in Connecticut - bought one in New Britain. The historic former post office downtown, the only office building in Krohn's portfolio, is very different that high-rise office towers or sprawling complexes, he says.

Development along East Hartford's Silver Lane moved forward last week, with town officials making a key approval and setting the date for another. In a 6-1 vote, the Planning and Zoning Commission approved zoning changes on Wednesday for the 26-acre lot of the old Showcase Cinemas, proposed for construction of a 477-unit apartment complex. New Britain-based Jasko Development plans to construct “amenity-rich” apartments at the site, with features including a dog park, swimming pool, and clubhouse.

New Britain-based developer Avner Krohn has acquired the old Post Office building at 114 West Main St. with plans to renovate the office building and find new tenants.  Krohn, owner of Jasko Development, paid $775,000 for the 36,530-square-foot office building, he said. The seller was the Knaus family and Old Post Office Plaza LLC. The deal was finalized June 2, according to city records. In addition to purchasing the old post office building, the sale also included the purchase of 50 Court St., a 0.3-acre overflow parking lot.
