National security correspondent jennifer griffin is at the pentagon tonight. reporter: greeted with celebratory gunfire and offers of coffee, iraqi troops finally made it into tikrit. translator: we are now in the city of tikrit. i d like to tell the displaced families to come back home as soon as possible. i m determined i ll never withdraw. reporter: iraqi forces accompanied by iranian advisers attempted from the north to the south taking over the hospital in the northern part of the city. though fighting continues street to street, it is slow going because of booby traps, smart bombs. general dempsey said he welcomed iranian involvement but issued this warning. we are all concerned about what happens after the drums stop beating and isil is defeated and whether the government of iraq will remain on a path to provide an inclusive government for all of the various groups within. we re very concerned about that.
