HONORED — Steubenville Mayor Jerry Barilla, left, congratulates former Mayor Domenick Mucci Jr. during Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Council presented Mucci with a resolution recognizing his service to the city.
-- Ross Gallabrese
STEUBENVILLE — Members of City Council never had the opportunity to thank former Mayor Domenick Mucci Jr. for his service to the community when he stepped down from the post three years ago.
They made up for that during Tuesday’s meeting, offering a resolution recognizing him for the 36 years he spent in city government and his other work in the community.
“It has taken us three years to do this,” said 5th Ward Councilman Willie Paul while making the presentation.

City expects to lift water conservation order | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff writer
STEUBENVILLE – Water Superintendent Jim Jenkins told City Council Tuesday water production is headed in the right direction.
“Hopefully, we’ll be lifting the conservation order tomorrow and it will be business as usual,” Jenkins said. “This wasn’t a crisis, but it was close: People still had water, we just asked residents to use it wisely. The ones that conserved, it made a difference.”
Jenkins had issued the conservation notice Friday after determining the plant’s super-pulsators weren’t performing correctly and the plant was struggling to produce enough water to properly supply the city’s needs.”
“When I left work Thursday, we were struggling, but still managing to produce enough water,” he said. “But when I came in Friday morning, (tanks and wells) were low, we were on the verge of a crisis, on the verge of losing water production in most of the city.”

Steubenville city officials to promote tax levies | News, Sports, Jobs

lharris@heraldstaronline.com
FIGURING IT OUT – With Steubenville’s 0.3 percent and 0.7 percent income taxes up for renewal on the May 4 ballot, city leaders gathered Friday to figure out how to get crucial information into the hands of voters.
STEUBENVILLE – During the next 100 days, city leaders are planning an all-out effort to make sure voters understand just how important renewing Steubenville’s two existing income tax levies is to municipal operations.
Voters in the May 4 election will be asked to renew the city’s 0.3 percent and 0.7 percent income taxes. Each levy question would require a separate “yes” vote for renewal.
“It’s extremely important,” Mayor Jerry Barilla said. “These are funds that the city relies on to operate — monies needed to pay for our police and fire departments’ wages, monies … for the paving of our streets and purchase of equipment (we need) to provide necessary services to the community, and monies for recreation improvements. So it’s essential that the citizens of Steubenville vote ‘yes’ on both the 0.7 and 0.3 percent renewal income tax.”

City will ask voters to approve levies | News, Sports, Jobs

LINDA HARRIS Staff writer
STEUBENVILLE — City Council voted Tuesday to ask voters to renew two existing levies that they say keep Steubenville running efficiently.
The two levies — a 0.7 of one percent levy earmarked for street improvements, capital improvements and equipment, parks and recreation and the general fund, and a 0.3 of one percent tax used for salaries and street improvements — will be on the May 4 election ballot. If the referendums are approved, the two levies would bring in a total of about $7 million a year for the next five years.
“The levies are not going up,” City Finance Director Dave Lewis said. “Council passed legislation to renew the existing levies for a five-year period. Revenue is projected to be about the same, but may vary slightly.”
