Senedd election: Fears thousands of young people not registered

It had been hoped turnout would be high among young people in their first Senedd election.
With just days left to register to vote, early data suggests thousands of 16 and 17-year-olds remain unregistered.
Figures gathered by the Electoral Reform Society (ERS) from six of Wales’ local authorities suggest a 'postcode lottery' when it comes to registration, with certain areas far higher than others.
According to the data, around 33 per cent of 16 and 17-year-olds are currently registered in Swansea compared to an estimated 65 per cent in the Vale of Glamorgan.
An estimated 70,000 16 and 17-year-olds will be able to vote in a Senedd election for the first time on May 6.

Thousands of young voters are running out of time to register to vote at the Welsh election, statistics show.
For the first time about 70,000 16 and 17-year-olds are eligible to vote when the polls open on 6 May.
But, figures gathered by the Election Reform Society (ERS) suggest fewer than 9,000 are registered in six counties - the deadline to do so is this Monday.
Jess Blair, of the ERS, said young people were "at risk of not having their say".

Thousands of 16 and 17-year-olds still to register to vote in Welsh election

Thousands of 16 and 17-year-olds are yet to register to vote in the Welsh Parliament election with just days left to do so, according to campaigners.
The Electoral Reform Society (ERS) said as few as 33% of people aged 16-17 in one area of Wales have registered to take part in the May 6 poll.
The Senedd election is the first national elections in Wales where 16 and 17-year-olds, as well as foreign nationals living in the country, will be allowed to cast a vote.
Around 70,000 people in the age group are eligible to register after the voting age was lowered last year.
In March 2020 the Welsh Government said research it commissioned showed young people and foreign citizens were more interested in voting in local elections than some groups of adults already enfranchised.

Party leaders must do more to engage with 16 and 17-year-olds who will be able to vote for the first time in May's Senedd elections, it is claimed.
An open letter from 32 organisations and academics urges them to "ramp up" engagement with the 100,000 new voters.
Wales' Senedd election on 6 May will be the first time 16 and 17-year-olds can vote in Wales.
The new law, passed in 2019, also means qualifying foreign nationals can vote for the first time.
