As a little girl, Jalina Colón’s grandmother taught her how to hand sew. The first item she remembers making was a pillowcase dress for her stuffed animal, Henrietta the Pig.
“I made my own little line of dresses for all my toys,” Colón says with a smile. “My grandmother even gave me trimmings, so I could add lace to the bottom of the dresses.
During difficult economic times, pillowcase dresses were a simple and inexpensive option for clothing. They were made from old linens, potato sacks and of course pillowcases. As the child grows, the dress often becomes a top and is held together at the shoulders with ribbons or string.
