The National D-Day Memorial wasn't open to the public until 2 p.m. but it was packed with nearly 900 soldiers and more than 3,500 family and friends of the soldiers. Buses that brought the soldiers and would take them off to Roanoke lined the circle around the Memorial. The morning was cold and a bit breezy, but it was bright and sunny.
