The effort to request federal funding to counteract erosion was spearheaded by U.S. Congresswoman Michelle Steel, who currently represents California's 48th District.
$15.5 million in funding for the much-needed project was approved by Congress and signed into law in March.
A press conference announcing the progress was attended by Rep. Michelle Steel (R-Surfside), members of the Army Corps of Engineers and other local dignitaries including mayors from Newport and Huntington Beach.
Last week’s funding bill included $15.5 million for the Surfside-Sunset and Newport Beach Replenishment Project.
