The district is using funds in the general balance, which have been saved over the years, to make up the deficit and fund upcoming educational model changes.
The referendum has failed by 453 votes, according to unofficial results Tuesday evening.
The last time the school district was facing a comparable deficit ($6 million in 2011) 70 teacher positions were lost.
"I hope to see a larger-than-expected turnout; unfortunately, history says voter turnout will be disappointing."
An expected enrollment slide, increased expenses and the loss of COVID funding are factors.
