Internal battles within the CFMMEU are set to cost the union about a fifth of its membership as the mining division begins to walk away.

The union’s construction division has signalled a fight, potentially deepening a fissure just a week before a vote by mining officials.

Some senior figures in the union movement feel the ad, from the construction and electrical trades unions, is counterproductive.

  It began with an obscure opinion poll in mid-January conducted for the CFMEU, led in Victoria by former Labor stalwart turned vehement anti-Albanese force, John Setka. Perhaps unsurprisingly this poll, conducted by a little-known polling company, of which scant details were released, found that the ALP could lose two heartland seats in the Hunter Valley.
