NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian heads to the Upper Hunter next week to campaign alongside a newly chosen by-election candidate she says is an underdog.
Little-known 45-year-old construction manager David Layzell was anointed as the Nationals' candidate for the crucial May 22 by-election on Wednesday, nudging out favoured contender, long-term Singleton mayor and cattle farmer Sue Moore.
'We are no doubt the underdogs,' Ms Berejiklian said on Thursday, pointing to a history of large swings against governments in by-elections.
But she said she was looking forward to campaigning with Mr Layzell in the marginal electorate, located in the heart of the NSW coal mining industry.

Drummoyne MP John Sidoti has been accused of fostering a “master-servant” relationship with local Liberal councillors by pressuring them to conduct council business according to his direction.
Former City of Canada Bay councillor Mirjana Cestar on Thursday told the corruption watchdog she felt so compromised by Mr Sidoti that she considered reporting him, but ultimately decided against it.
“I thought the type of behavior that John was exhibiting would ultimately be his own downfall, that he had enough rope to hang himself anyway, so I didn’t really need to contribute to it.”

Drummoyne MP John Sidoti allegedly engineered a plan to dislodge two sitting Liberals from a 2017 council preselection ticket in place of two others, including a 21-year-old from his own electorate office.
Canada Bay Liberal councillor Michael Megna told a town planner in 2017 that Mr Sidoti held concerns about councillors Mirjana Cestar and Helen McCaffrey, shortly after they voted down a lengthy campaign to rezone blocks where the Sidoti family held property.

The Berejiklian government’s ability to balance mining interests against environmental concerns is set to be central to its bid to retain the must-win marginal Upper Hunter electorate with One Nation preparing to take on the Coalition over coal.
The byelection, triggered by the resignation of MP Michael Johnsen over allegations he raped a sex worker which he denies, is set to be a four-party contest, with One Nation announcing on Thursday it would contest the May 22 poll.

Could there be a worse time for the NSW Coalition to contest a byelection sparked by one of their own male MPs behaving deplorably in the state’s halls of power?
Less than a month ago, thousands of women rallied against misogyny and sexual violence amid a toxic culture of sexism and harassment plaguing the highest office in the country.

The resignation in disgrace of the Upper Hunter National MP Michael Johnsen puts the Berejiklian government's majority at risk.
The government was re-elected in 2019 with 48 seats, compared to Labor's 36, but with an expanded crossbench of nine members, three Greens, three Shooters, Fishers and Farmers (SFF) and three Independents.
Mr Johnson's resignation yesterday means Upper Hunter will be the subject of a by-election.
With Drummoyne MP John Sidoti having stood aside from the Liberal Party over an ICAC inquiry, the loss of Mr Johnsen's seat at a by-election would end the government's majority in the Legislative Assembly.

Sidoti has previously denied the allegations against him, and the rezoning he had allegedly sought did not go ahead.
In his opening address, the counsel assisting , Rob Ranken, said the commission would investigate whether Sidoti had sought to improperly influence four Liberal party councillors to support a rezoning effort that would have benefited properties owned by interests linked to his family.
“Mr Sidoti regularly raised with the Liberal councillors issues concerning the urban design study and associated planning proposals, particularly the exclusion of the Waterview Street site,” Ranken said.
“Mr Sidoti arranged and attended meetings with Liberal councillors ... discussing upcoming consideration by the council of the urban design study and associated planning proposals, how the councillors might decide the issue and, on occasion, what motion they should move.”
